Background of the Study
School-based nutrition awareness programs are essential in shaping lifelong healthy eating habits among children and adolescents (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). These programs focus on educating students, teachers, and parents about proper nutrition, dietary diversity, and the prevention of malnutrition-related diseases (Olawale et al., 2023). In Adamawa State, where malnutrition remains a public health issue, school-based nutrition interventions have been introduced to improve knowledge and dietary practices among schoolchildren.
Research suggests that effective nutrition education programs lead to better food choices, improved academic performance, and a reduction in childhood obesity and undernutrition (Bello et al., 2024). However, the success of such programs in Adamawa State is yet to be comprehensively evaluated. This study examines the effectiveness of school-based community nutrition programs in improving dietary awareness and health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of school-based nutrition awareness programs, malnutrition and poor dietary habits persist among schoolchildren in Adamawa State (Aliyu & Ojo, 2024). Limited resources, lack of trained personnel, and inadequate policy enforcement may affect program outcomes. This study evaluates the effectiveness of these programs and explores challenges affecting their implementation.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of school-based nutrition awareness programs in improving dietary knowledge.
To evaluate the impact of nutrition education on students' food choices and health.
To identify challenges affecting the implementation of nutrition awareness programs in schools.
Research Questions
How effective are school-based nutrition awareness programs in enhancing students' dietary knowledge?
What is the impact of nutrition education on students' food choices and overall health?
What are the key challenges limiting the success of school-based nutrition programs?
Research Hypotheses
School-based nutrition awareness programs significantly improve students' dietary knowledge.
Students who receive nutrition education make healthier food choices compared to those who do not.
Limited resources and policy constraints negatively affect the success of school-based nutrition programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on school-based nutrition awareness programs in Adamawa State. Limitations include differences in program implementation across schools, variations in parental influence, and potential biases in self-reported dietary behaviors.
